A series of portable light carts, which bring an extra light source to industrial or commercial work areas is increasing productivity. The new line includes several models - Class I, Div. 1 explosion proof; Class I, Div. 2 hazardous location; general industrial task light; and inspection light carts for detecting flaws in high quality finishing applications.

Typical applications include areas where additional light is needed such as automotive, corrosion inspection, military installations, D.O.T. projects such as indoor or outdoor night maintenance, airport tarmacs, furniture finishing, or even as diverse as casket manufacturing.

While one model features a single 4 ft. fixture, others come equipped with two, three or four 4 ft. fixtures. The carts are designed for use in a broad variety of industries, ranging from laboratory and inspection to general task applications, as well as hazardous duty use where explosion proof lighting is required. All carts require either a 120-volt or 277-volt power supply.

The standard 2 fixture 4 ft. cart can be positioned for either vertical or horizontal light mounting. The fixtures are attached to swivel mount brackets, enabling directional aiming of the light source. Other choices include single fixture carts in either horizontal or vertical configurations.

Options available are an outlet box for 120v carts only, adjustable tool trays, cord reels, polycarbonate lens, Protect-A-Lamp guards, and more, depending on model.

The Many Uses of Self Dumping Hoppers

Of all the industrial storage bins available, self dumping hoppers are the most versatile, flexible and easy to handle. Because they come in so many sizes and are made from materials as light as polyurethane and as heavy as heavy gauge steel, there is literally a hopper for every industrial setting, from the small workshop to the largest warehouse or factory. Take a look at some typical industrial settings where self dumping hoppers are used and see what they are used for:

In the loading docks at the back of a large retail appliance store, you will see several large waste bins. One will be for plastic, another for cardboard and still another for general waste. Throughout the day, warehouse staff will be unpacking boxes of goods for display inside the store.

The cardboard boxes will be broken down and stacked someplace temporarily. The bubble wrap, foam peanuts and other plastic recyclables need to be stored in a waste receptacle before being transported out to the bin allocated to plastics.

The most efficient way to store, transport and remove all of this plastic waste is by having a light duty, forkliftable self dumping hopper on the warehouse floor. After the forklift operator empties the plastics, he can come back and throw the cardboard into the hopper and take that out to the cardboard recycling bin.

In any manufacturing setting, the machining of materials produces large amounts of waste. A lathe or saw produces small particles of waste in large quantities. Feeding devices attached to low profile self dumping hoppers direct all that waste into the hopper. When it is full, the forklift operator can take it to the waste receptacles outside in a matter of minutes.

Self dumping hoppers are invaluable on construction sites, where wood and steel offcuts, empty cement bags and other rubble collects rapidly. There is no easier way to clear the working area fast than with a hopper. If it also has casters attached, it can be rolled from area to area, making cleanup that much easier.

The food service industry produces large volumes of organic waste. Lidded polyurethane self dumping hoppers are perfect for the storage of this waste. Seamless and watertight, there is no leakage and the lid eliminates unpleasant odors. After the hopper is emptied, it can easily be washed out with a hose.

These are just some of the uses hoppers are put to every day in all kinds of materials handling situations. Because they safely latch when in the upright position, but are so easily emptied when full, there is no better container for waste. They are also ideal for those situations when large volumes of small parts or other materials make transport with lift truck forks impractical or impossible. Self dumping hoppers are not only economical and versatile, they are indispensable in any industrial setting.

Pros And Cons Of Pneumatic Tires In Heavy Duty Industrial Caster Applications

Pneumatic tires are a popular wheel option in industrial caster applications. Pneumatic tires are wheels with a metal hub with a rubber tire mounted to it. The tire is filled with air or foam to a desired pressure level to achieve the appropriate load and deflection characteristics. There are many benefits to using this type of wheel as well as a few drawbacks. This article will discuss the pros and cons to using pneumatic wheels in your caster application.

Pneumatic tires have many benefits in industrial caster applications. The main benefit is the ability to absorb shock loads from impacts and cushion the load. So pneumatics are used in applications with uneven or bumpy terrain or where the contents of the cart must not be subjected to sudden shock loads. Pneumatic tires can also be used off-road as they can absorb the unevenness of off road terrain. These wheels lend themselves well to applications that require both off-road an on pavement operation. Pneumatic tires are also quiet in use because of the soft rubber tread and shock absorbing ability. This helps improve the working conditions of the personnel since they are not subjected to loud noises which could damage their hearing.

Cons

There are also some drawbacks to using pneumatic wheels in industrial caster applications. One drawback is the wheels require more force to start in motion. This is due to the large footprint and deflection of the air filled tire. This large footprint also make the wheels harder to swivel and often the caster will require a longer swivel lead. Because the wheels are lighter, the chance of caster wheel flutter also increases, which can be negated by the increased swivel lead. Another drawback to pneumatic wheels is the increased maintenance of having to monitor air pressure because the wheels are easy to puncture, which results in flats. One way to get around this is to fill the wheels with polyurethane foam, which prevents flats but reduces the cushioning affect of the wheels.

Pneumatic tires can provide some great benefits in industrial caster applications, such as shock absorbing and providing the ability to go off-road. However, there are drawbacks such as reduced roll-ability and increased chance of flutter that must be dealt with. When taking these factors into consideration when designing the pneumatic tire for your industrial caster application, your chances for success are greatly improved.

Jeep Cherokee Death Wobble Trouble Shooting

One of the scariest problems that occurs on Jeep Cherokees is know as death wobble. Death Wobble is when the front tires start to shake violently. Think of a shopping cart wheel that flutters and having two of them on the front of your Jeep.

Death wobble is very common on lifted Jeeps but can occur on stock vehicle as well. The root cause is the instability of the inverted Y steering linkage on the Jeep.

When every thing is working well, this type of steering and suspension works very well. However, when things go wrong, the shake can be very scary and can potentially damaging.

The axle is located side to side by the track bar. The joint on the frame end is made like a tie rod and is susceptible to damage due to corrosion and over extension. Just a very sight amount of wear in this joint can allow the axle to move side to side and can lead to the death wobble shake.

Another base cause of death wobble is the caster angle. The caster angle changes slightly when the XJ Cherokee is lifted due to the unequal length control arms. This angle can be corrected with shims. Very often death wobble can be eliminated by altering the caster angle. More or less caster than the factory recommended settings may be required for your suspension so you may have to experiment.

Worn or soft control arm bushings can lead to caster angle changes and therefore lead to death wobble. Replacing worn bushings are retrofitting polyurethane bushings can correct your steering angles and sometimes eliminate the death wobble.

Sometimes the source of death wobble can be very elusive. Some cases have been reported where the mount for the track bar has become slightly lose either due to loose bolts or metal fatigue and death wobble occurs. This one can be particularly hard to find as every thing may look fine in a visual inspection of the suspension.

To check the track bar and it mounting points, have an assistant move the steering wheel back and forth while you observe the track bar and its mounting points. Also, by placing a finger on the tire and on the fender flare note any side to side movement of the axle when the wheels are turned. Often you can feel the axle body of the truck move slightly before the wheel starts to turn if there is wear in the track bar or is mounts.

Another possible source of difficulty are the steering box bolts. The bolts that pass through the steering box and secure it to the frame also pass through an aluminum spacer. Often this spacer corrodes and keeps the bolts form turning. Even if they feel tight with a wrench, they may not be holding the box tight to the frame. Also, this area of the frame is highly stressed by off road driving and larger tires and can break. Any looseness in the steering box mounts can contribute to death wobble.

If all else fails in trying to correct a death wobble situation, you can try replacing the steering stabilizer. However, in doing so you are only masking the problem not curing it.

In an emergency situation where you must drive a XJ that is experiencing death wobble there are a few tricks that you can try. The first is to toe out the steering by adjusting the tie rod. This will wear the tires but will also put pressure on the suspension and keep it in place so it does not shake making the Jeep drivable. Reducing the air pressure in the tires to trail levels can also eliminate death wobble although I am not sure why.

Death wobble can be a very scary problem and can be very frustrating to solve. Often it is only intermittent and happens at the most inopportune times. If these common solutions do not cure your death wobble see my website for a more thorough list of things to check.

Specialized Seating - Is Polyurethane Or ESD Seating the Right Choice For Your Company?

ESD and Polyurethane seating, while perhaps not the most popular or well known choice for office chairs, is specialized seating that is sometimes required and needed by companies. Primarily used in the healthcare industry, the material that makes up these chairs is different than your typical fabric, mesh, leather material. From the chair's back to the base to the type of casters/glides used on the chair are all specially constructed.

ESD (Static-Dissipative) chairs' fabric make these chairs safe for use around sensitive components and equipment. ESD chairs are designed specifically to eliminate problems caused by combining conductive materials such as hooded static-free casters and upholstered in static-free fabric. Even simple movements such as reaching for a telephone can generate enough voltage to damage or degrade sensitive microelectronic components, which is why this specialty seating came about.

Polyurethane Casters

In order to resist static, an ESD chair is carefully and thoughtfully crafted. When the back of the chair is designed, the front and rear panels are covered with ESD compliant fabric or vinyl secured to copper bands inside the backrest. Electrical discharge from copper bands travel through die cast aluminum back bar to the metal frame of control mechanism. The seat of the chair is also secured to copper bands inside. Polyurethane seating is primarily used in industrial, scientific, medical, laboratory, clean room, and electronic assembly environments. The polyurethane material resists stains, punctures, and damage from water, grease, and chemicals. There are two types of polyurethane seating available from manufacturers of high quality factory and industrial seating. The most common polyurethane seating come in the form of a thin profile seat of hardened polyurethane. Self skinned polyurethane seating is critically important to intensive work environments for its durability, toughness, and cleanliness. In this particular seating situation you must be willing to sacrifice comfort for long term durability and resistance to many things. The availability of self skinned polyurethane seating makes this type of chair a mainstay in many cost effective industrial environments.

Spray on polyurethane differs from standard self skinned polyurethane in the form of the polyurethane applied to the chair. In the latter, the polyurethane coat is applied to a polyurethane seat - the result is a hard, stiff sit. In the former, spray on polyurethane (otherwise known as SPU seating), the standard foam used in standard seats is coated with a durable polyurethane solution. The result is the most comfortable and durable polyurethane solution available. All SPU seating meets the specialized requirements of factory, clean room, laboratory, and other harsh environments where durability is essential. Most SPU and self skinned polyurethane is available only in black. Spray-on polyurethane seating is available on select industrial/healthcare chairs.

Office Safety For Unusual Events - Replacement Office Chair Casters

For weeks the employees have prepared for the biggest event of the year. This event is the annual desk chair race that pits the Paper Wads versus the Pencil Pushers. Management and employees alike get involved. The race preparations have all been completed and the race track has been laid. Only one detail has been overlooked. No one installed the replacement office chair casters!

Polyurethane Casters

The race was going well until lap two of the race. Then disaster struck. The fourth chair belonging to the Paper Wad team blew a caster in the number four turn. This cost the Paper Wads the victory, but the chair went into a controlled skid stopping safely three inches before the finish line. This pit crew was extremely disappointed, but quickly discussed a plan to replace the chair casters in time for next year's race.

Polyurethane Casters

Do races like this really happen? No one really knows, but the importance of this story is not to assume that your office chairs are safe and in good working order. You must inspect them on a regular basis in order to keep yourself and your coworkers safe. Fortunately, most office furniture replacements pieces are quite easy to keep on hand and install when needed.

Office chairs, like most office furniture, serve a valuable purpose in the context of safety. It would be very strenuous on the body to stay bent over a desk all day, when a roll around chair makes working much easier. The wrong chair can become a hazard itself if not chosen correctly.

When choosing from the vast selection of replacement casters, you must consider the type of flooring on which the chair will be sitting. Chair mats may be helpful, but floors made of wood, tile, and carpeting requires a soft polyurethane wheel in order to stave off scuffing and dents.

For offices with medium pile or outdoor carpeting, with no floor mats, hard nylon casters may be the ticket. Concrete floors need casters that are coated with rubber in order to increase the gripping effect. When replacing wheel casters, considering the type of flooring can pay dividends with safety and performance.

Taking a few minutes every day to check the wear on your office chair casters can save you and your coworkers from accidental injury. It is a simple process. Start from behind the chair and tip the back of the chair toward the floor in your direction. This places all four wheels to where they can be easily accessed. Check the connecting bolts and nuts and shake each one. If the casing rattles, it is time to replace them. If one falls off before you touch it, replace it immediately.

Once you have the chair tipped over, go ahead and check the manufacturing stickers and write down all serial numbers. Doing so will prevent any confusion when ordering replacements. If the Paper Wad team hadn't forgotten this very important detail they wouldn't have broken their three year winning streak and handed the victory to the Pencil Pushers. Go Team!

How To Choose The Right Caster Wheels - Part 1

So you are about to make a dollie and need casters and wheels. Now don't go off and grab just any set of casters and wheels that you may find. Before you make your decision you need to figure out the specifics as to what the dollie will be mainly used for. There are many factors to take into consideration. Number one, don't think that any caster will support what you're going to me moving.

Polyurethane Casters

Being a former employee of a music company's distribution division, I have experienced first hand what can happen when you decide to go cheap or get lazy and not do your homework. Moving everything from light keyboards with attached stands to church organs to nine foot grand pianos you have got to be prepared for the environments you will be working in. You find out real quick how costly it can be when you neglect to do your homework or just go cheap. Prime example... Our manager purchased and put together a new dollie with questionable plastic wheels. The dollie sat in a truck during a freezing cold winter night. The next morning we arrived at one of our warehouses to pick up a custom seven foot grand piano made to order. As my fellow worker and I used the new dollie to transfer the piano into the truck, one of the new plastic casters shattered from the severe cold, throwing the custom seven foot grand piano abruptly to the ground. The damage was catastrophic! The customer was irate. The company had to take the hit and order a new piano and in the end the manager was no longer our manager.

Polyurethane Casters

Two major questions you need to ask yourself prior to purchasing casters would be...

1. What will you be using it for? Yes, I know, for moving, but moving what? Are they particularly heavy items?

2. What is the environment you will be mostly using it in? Will it be used outside as much as inside, on tile, or on carpet?

With so many wheel/caster options available, it can be quite the challenge to make a selection for your application. Let's cover the first few important steps prior to purchasing caster wheels for your application.

First and foremost is Caster Capacity. The caster capacity is the total weight an individual caster can support. In order to figure which caster capacity best suits your application you must follow this equation... Divide the total weight of the maximum load you will be needing the casters for by the number of casters you are going to attach to the dollie. Now choose the caster with a caster capacity greater than or equal to your result.

There are guidelines for regarding types of casters and floor surface ratings that should be taken into consideration.

Asphalt: Rubber, Polyurethane and Semi to Full Pneumatics are excellent, Phenolic (molded plastic) and Polyolefin are fair, and Iron or Semi-Steel are not recommended for use on asphalt.

Concrete: Rubber, Polyurethane and Semi to Full Pneumatics are excellent, Phenolic (molded plastic) and Polyolefin are good for use, and Iron or Semi-Steel are a fair choice.

Tile: Rubber, Polyurethane and Semi to Full Pneumatics are excellent, Phenolic (molded plastic) and Polyolefin are fair, and Iron or Semi-Steel should not be used.

Hardwood Flooring: Rubber, Polyurethane and Semi to Full Pneumatics are excellent, Phenolic (molded plastic) and Polyolefin are good, and Iron or Semi-Steel are not recommended what so ever.

Carpets: Polyurethane, Semi to Full Pneumatics, Phenolic (molded plastic), and Polyolefin are all good for use, but Iron or Semi-Steel can cut in and not get very good grip while transferring.

3 Brake Options For Kingpinless Swivel Or Rigid Casters In Heavy Duty Industrial Caster Applications

Brakes are a very popular option for heavy duty industrial casters. Brakes allow the user to stop carts in motion and lock them in place, which can serve application purposes or increase safety by reducing the chance of a runaway cart. There are many different types of caster brakes available with different characteristics. This article will discuss some of the more popular brake designs.

Polyurethane Casters

1. Polyurethane Cam Brakes

Polyurethane Casters

The polyurethane cam brakes utilize a cam made from polyurethane. The cam is then used to tighten a plate against the running surface of the wheel, locking the wheel in place. The cam can be actuated from a variety of different methods, from handles to levers molded directly into the cam. The polyurethane cam brake provides good holding force which can be adjusted depending on how far the cam is turned into the wheel. Another benefit to this type of brake is the actuation method can be done with feet, so operator strain from bending over to actuate with a hand can be eliminated. These brakes can be mounted on the leading or trailing edge of a caster.

2. Face Contact Brakes

Face contact brakes use a threaded rod to push a plate into the running surface of the wheel. The threaded rod has a handle attached to the end of it and is tightened by hand. These brakes provide a large holding force and are good in heavy load applications. These brakes can be mounted on the leading or trailing edge of a caster. The drawback to this type of brake is the operator needs to bend over and tighten/loosen the brake by hand, which increases operator strain and can take up more time than a foot actuated brake.

3. Side Brakes

Side brakes utilize a foot pedal on the side of the caster which, when actuated, presses a washer into the hub of the wheel. These brakes are very easy to lock and unlock and can be done with the operators foot. They also take up very little room since they are mounted to the side of the caster and fit within the swivel radius of the caster wheel. The drawback to these brakes is they do not provide much holding force and therefore are suited better for light duty applications.

These are just a few of the more popular brake designs for heavy duty industrial casters. Choosing the correct brake design can improve the operation and safety of your caster application.
