For weeks the employees have prepared for the biggest event of the year. This event is the annual desk chair race that pits the Paper Wads versus the Pencil Pushers. Management and employees alike get involved. The race preparations have all been completed and the race track has been laid. Only one detail has been overlooked. No one installed the replacement office chair casters!
The race was going well until lap two of the race. Then disaster struck. The fourth chair belonging to the Paper Wad team blew a caster in the number four turn. This cost the Paper Wads the victory, but the chair went into a controlled skid stopping safely three inches before the finish line. Polyurethane Casters
Do races like this really happen? No one really knows, but the importance of this story is not to assume that your office chairs are safe and in good working order. You must inspect them on a regular basis in order to keep yourself and your coworkers safe. Fortunately, most office furniture replacements pieces are quite easy to keep on hand and install when needed.
Office chairs, like most office furniture, serve a valuable purpose in the context of safety. It would be very strenuous on the body to stay bent over a desk all day, when a roll around chair makes working much easier. The wrong chair can become a hazard itself if not chosen correctly.
When choosing from the vast selection of replacement casters, you must consider the type of flooring on which the chair will be sitting. Chair mats may be helpful, but floors made of wood, tile, and carpeting requires a soft polyurethane wheel in order to stave off scuffing and dents.
For offices with medium pile or outdoor carpeting, with no floor mats, hard nylon casters may be the ticket. Concrete floors need casters that are coated with rubber in order to increase the gripping effect. When replacing wheel casters, considering the type of flooring can pay dividends with safety and performance.
Taking a few minutes every day to check the wear on your office chair casters can save you and your coworkers from accidental injury. It is a simple process. Start from behind the chair and tip the back of the chair toward the floor in your direction. This places all four wheels to where they can be easily accessed. Check the connecting bolts and nuts and shake each one. If the casing rattles, it is time to replace them. If one falls off before you touch it, replace it immediately.
Once you have the chair tipped over, go ahead and check the manufacturing stickers and write down all serial numbers. Doing so will prevent any confusion when ordering replacements. If the Paper Wad team hadn't forgotten this very important detail they wouldn't have broken their three year winning streak and handed the victory to the Pencil Pushers. Go Team!
